Product Photography Tips That Cost Nothing Extra

Camera used for product photography

You don't need a professional studio to take product photos that look trustworthy and appealing on your website. A phone camera and a few simple habits go a long way.

Use natural light, not your flash

Shoot near a window during daytime instead of using a phone's built-in flash, which creates harsh shadows and washed-out colors. Soft, indirect daylight is the single biggest quality upgrade available for free.

A plain, consistent background

A plain white or neutral-colored backdrop (even a bedsheet or poster board) keeps attention on the product and makes your whole catalog look cohesive when photos are taken the same way each time.

Shoot from multiple angles

Online shoppers can't pick up and turn over a product, so 3-4 angles (front, back, detail close-up, in-use context) do the job their hands would normally do.

Keep sizing and cropping consistent

A grid of products where each photo is cropped and sized differently looks noticeably less professional than one where every image follows the same aspect ratio and framing distance.

Good product photos are one of the highest-leverage, lowest-cost improvements a shop can make to its website — and it's entirely within your control, starting with your next photoshoot.
