.vn or .com: Which Domain Should Your Vietnamese Shop Choose?

Domain name registration concept on a laptop screen

Choosing a domain feels small, but it's one of the few decisions that's genuinely hard to undo later without losing SEO progress and brand recognition. Here's how to actually decide between .vn and .com.

The case for .vn

A .vn domain signals immediately that you're a Vietnamese business — this builds instant trust with local customers, especially for categories where buyers worry about scams (electronics, high-value goods). Google also treats .vn as a strong local-relevance signal for Vietnamese search results.

The case for .com

.com is the domain people type by habit and remember most easily, especially if you plan to sell beyond Vietnam. It's also generally cheaper to register and renew than .vn, and doesn't require the extra paperwork .vn sometimes involves for verification.

A simple way to decide

  • Selling mainly to Vietnamese customers, in a trust-sensitive category → lean .vn
  • Selling internationally, or want the simplest possible setup → lean .com
  • Not sure yet? Register both if the name is available — redirect one to the other
Whichever you choose, avoid switching domains later if you can help it — every domain change resets some of the SEO trust Google has built up for your site.
